The best online alarm clocks

Best Creative Alarm Clock

Waking up isn’t always easy. An alarm clock certainly gets the job done, but not always in the most useful or pleasant way.

With the variety of free online alarm clocks now available, there’s an alarm clock for almost everyone. As long as you have a computer or a mobile device and an internet connection, you can start using any online alarm clock right away.

Here are a few situations where an online alarm clock might come in handy (even if you already have access to a traditional alarm clock by your bedside table or a built-in alarm clock app on your mobile device):

  • When you’re traveling. Chances are you’re not going to bring your big, bulky bedside alarm clock on the road with you. Since you’ll probably bring your computer or mobile device with you anyway, having it double as an alarm clock is pretty darn convenient.
  • When you need a backup alarm. It stinks when your alarm doesn’t go off for whatever reason (or you’ve just become so accustomed to hitting snooze that it hardly phases you anymore). Sometimes having a backup alarm is worth it.
  • When you want customizable features. Whether you’re looking to replace the horrid buzzing noise of your traditional alarm clock with pleasant sounds of nature, or expecting a weather report for the current day as soon as you open your eyes, there are online alarm clocks out there that offer all sorts of amazingly innovative and customizable features to improve your wake-up experience.

Keep in mind that if you try any of the following web-based alarm clocks in a web browser, you’ll need to make sure that your computer or device stays on. That means disabling sleep mode, plugging your laptop or device charger in so the battery doesn’t run out and hoping there’s no power outage before you need your alarm to go off—otherwise you’ll be out of luck.01of 07

What We Like

  • No ads.
  • Lots of customization options.

What We Don’t Like

  • Can set only one alarm.
  • No snooze button.

For a super simple, ad-free and pleasantly personalized wake-up experience right from the desktop, Onlive Clock is our number one choice. The screen shows a digital clock in large numbers over a calm nature scene, which you can change to anything you want by accessing the settings.

Use the drop-down options beneath the time to set your alarm and click the gear icon in the menu at the bottom of the screen to configure your general settings, choose the type of clock you want and the color of the numbers, select or upload a background image and set an alarm sound. You can choose from one of the four built-in sounds, one of the built-in radio stations or a YouTube video of your choice.

As an added bonus, you can click the frame button in the lower right corner to conveniently enter full-screen mode. It also looks gorgeous in a mobile web browser. The only major drawbacks are that you can’t set multiple alarms and there’s no snooze button.

What We Like

  • Lots of customization settings.
  • Sleep timer allows you to fall asleep to music while retaining alarm clock setting.
  • Multiple-alarm capability.

What We Don’t Like

  • Ad-supported.
  • Limited selection of alarm sounds.

Alarm Clock HD is really one of the best choices for music lovers who also happen to be Apple fanboys or fangirls. This handy app transforms your iPhone or iPad into a powerful alarm clock that allows you to set an unlimited number of alarms and wake up to your favorite music from your iTunes library.

To set an alarm, simply tap the clock icon in the top right corner of the screen, tap the green Add Alarm button and you’ll be shown several customizable settings for your alarm including Repeat, Music, Notification Sound, Volume, and Label. You can also take advantage of the Music Sleep Timer on the settings tab, which allows you to fall asleep to your favorite music.

This app comes with a range of other features that makes it really unique, like:

  • Twitter integration so you can skim through your feed before you sleep.
  • Local weather information.
  • A brightness setting that you can easily customize by sliding your finger across the clock screen.
  • An instant flashlight that can be activated by shaking the device.
  • Customizable clock appearance options and unlimited foreground colors.

The only downside is the ads. You can, however, pay for a small upgrade to remove them.

What We Like

  • Extremely customizable, with lots of bells and whistles.
  • Analyzes sleep patterns and behavior.

What We Don’t Like

  • No iOS version.
  • Ad-supported.

Alarm Clock Xtreme is no ordinary alarm clock. This incredible Android app is a smart alarm clock with features that arguably blow the others on this list out of the water.

You can set your alarms to wake you up exactly how you want to be woken up. Your alarm can slowly increase in volume for a gentle wake-up, play a favorite song from your music library to wake up to and force you to solve math problems before you snooze or dismiss the alarm. You can also prevent yourself from falling victim to excessive snoozing by setting a maximum number of snoozes and setting the snooze duration to decrease in time each time you tap it.

As a huge bonus, this app doubles as a sleep tracker. It has the ability to analyze your sleep behavior, identify trends, filter data by weekday and even give you a sleep score based on the data obtained. Like Alarm Clock HD for iOS, Alarm Clock Xtreme’s free version has ads, a premium, ad-free version is available for a small payment upgrade.
